How to use the Tip Calculator
Enter your total bill amount, select a tip percentage (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%, or a custom amount), and specify how many people are splitting the bill. The calculator instantly shows the tip amount, total bill, and the amount each person owes.
How tip is calculated
Tip amount = Bill total × (Tip % ÷ 100). Per-person share = (Bill total + Tip amount) ÷ Number of people. For example, a $80 bill with an 18% tip among 4 people: tip = $14.40, total = $94.40, per person = $23.60.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard tip percentage at a restaurant?
In the United States, 15–20% is the standard range for restaurant service. 18% is widely considered the baseline for good service, while 20–25% is common for excellent service. Tip less only if service was genuinely poor.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette varies, but most diners tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Either approach is acceptable — tipping on the full amount (including tax) is slightly more generous and simpler to calculate.
How do I split the bill unevenly?
This calculator splits the total evenly. For unequal splits, calculate the total bill including tip, then divide manually based on what each person ordered. Many restaurant apps and payment systems now support itemised splitting.
Do I tip on takeout or delivery orders?
Tipping 10–15% on takeout is appreciated but optional. For delivery, 15–20% (or a minimum of $3–5) is customary, as drivers bear fuel and time costs. For app-based delivery, tip through the app so the driver receives it directly.
How do I calculate a 20% tip quickly in my head?
Move the decimal one place left to get 10% of the bill, then double it for 20%. For example: $47 bill → 10% = $4.70 → 20% = $9.40. For 15%, take 10% and add half of that amount.
